What this book is

To the world, she is Nurse Sugar. Glamorous, successful, self-made. Millions watch her pack orders, coach nursing students, and celebrate a fairytale Nigerian wedding that lights up the internet.

Read the full descriptionShow less

Nobody sees the rest.

Born in one room in Ibadan, Nigeria, and raised on faith, milk tea, and her parents' sacrifice, Sugar leaves Nigeria with nothing but ambition. She survives the U.S. Navy, fails one exam, and turns that failure into a business that puts her name in thousands of nurses' hands. She builds the life she promised herself.

Then comes the wedding the internet falls in love with, and the beautiful life becomes a beautiful lie.

Behind the posts and the pink office is a woman sleeping on her own couch, paying every bill, begging to be believed, while millions watch a life she no longer recognizes.

Told in urgent, unflinching present tense, My Life as Sugar is the story of a woman who built everything, hid everything, and finally chose herself. It is for every woman holding something heavy inside a life that looks perfect from the outside.

You can choose yourself. This is what it costs, and what it gives back.

For years you watched me win. The scrubs, the study guides, the pink office, the wedding that lit up your feeds. What you never saw is what it cost to keep smiling while my real life came apart quietly behind the camera. This book is the part I could not post. I wrote it for every woman building something beautiful while carrying something heavy. You are not alone. You can choose yourself. Thank you for waiting for me. Here is everything.

What readers are saying

★★★★★

This book took me on a journey, a true rollercoaster of emotions. There were moments I found myself applauding the author, and others where I was completely shocked. An amazing read, and I'd definitely recommend it.

My Life as Sugar is a story of extraordinary vulnerability, resilience, and determination. Sugar never needs to dramatize the pain she has endured. She bleeds onto the page and allows her experience to speak for itself. From a childhood marked by an entrepreneurial spirit and a belief in building something bigger despite her circumstances, to the woman who ultimately has to fight to reclaim the life she built, I found myself rooting for Sugar on every page.

This is a story about one woman's strength, but it is also a testament to the ways women hold one another up. Again and again, when Sugar's world threatens to collapse around her, women show up: sisters, friends, family, mentors. Their love runs through the memoir as its own kind of resistance. The women are there. The women understand. The women never doubt her truth.

At its heart, My Life as Sugar feels like a war cry for women's liberation from the expectations of patriarchy and a love letter to every immigrant who has dared to believe that sacrifice, ambition, and sheer determination can create a different life. Sugar's story is painful, joyful, deeply vulnerable, and fiercely hopeful. I was rooting for her from the first page to the last.

★★★★★

I have felt many things while reading books, but never have I carried such a heavy, sad heart from the beginning of a book to the very end, as I did reading My Life as Sugar.

It is a true story many women need to read, but also one you would never wish for another woman to live through.

There is no blame sharing, just an honest recounting of events that slowly breaks your heart. And yet, you cannot stop turning the pages because beneath all that sadness, you keep hoping the author will finally wake up and choose herself. Choose her worth.

A painful, necessary read.

Absolutely a must-read.
