8 Scholarships for Nursing Students in 2023

College is expensive, and it’s more expensive if you’re studying to be a nurse. Luckily, there are scholarships that can defray the costs of Nursing school by helping you pay for tuition, books, housing and other expenses. 

There are many scholarships available to nursing students in need of financial aid, but note, not all are created equal and are easy to qualify for. In this post I would be sharing scholarships available to nursing students alongside links and helpful details on how to apply.

1.Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association (FNSNA) General Scholarship

Award: Up to $10,000

This scholarship is available to all US nursing students currently enrolled in a state-approved undergraduate or graduate nursing program. These scholarships typically reflect a specific area of specialization within the nursing profession such as oncology, critical care, or emergency nursing or a certain population of the nursing profession that is often underrepresented.

Requirements: Must be enrolled in a state-approved nursing program leading to an associate degree, baccalaureate, diploma, direct-entry master’s degree, RN to BSN/MSN completion, LPN/LVN to RN, or accelerated programs.

  • Funds are not available for graduate study unless it is for a first degree in nursing

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident

  • Must prove financial need

2. National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) 

Award: $1,000 to $15,000

This annual scholarship is available to nursing students who are members of NBNA and a local chapter member, currently enrolled in a nursing program with good academic standing and at least one full year of school remaining. 

Requirements: Must be currently enrolled in a nursing program (LPN/LVN, ADN, RN-BSN, Generic BSN, Masters, Doctorate) and in good scholastic standing at the time of application.

  • Must be a member of NBNA and local chapter (if one exists around you).

  • Have one year of school remaining at time of application.

Deadline: April 15, 2023.

3. AfterCollege/AACN Scholarship Fund

Award: $10,000 ($2,500 quarterly) 

This scholarship supports students currently enrolled in bachelor’s, masters or doctoral degrees in nursing at an AACN member institution. 

Special consideration will be given to students in a graduate program with the goal of becoming a nurse educator; students completing an RN-to-BSN or RN-to-MSN program; and those enrolled in an accelerated program.

Requirements: Must be enrolled (not just accepted) in an AACN member institution. See if your school is an AACN member here.

  • Must be of good academic standing.

Deadlines: March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31

4. Nurse Corps Scholarship Program

Award: Full funding 

It’s available for nursing students accepted or enrolled in a nursing program to receive funding for tuition, fees and other educational expenses, in exchange for working at a Critical Shortage Facility when they graduate. 

Requirements: Must be a U.S. citizen (born or naturalized), a national or a  lawful permanent resident. 

  • Must be accepted or enrolled student in a diploma, associate, baccalaureate or graduate nursing programs, at a United States accredited school of nursing.

  • Must be able to prove financial need. 

  • Must begin classes no later than September 30.

5. Nurses Make A Difference Scholarship

Award: $1,000

This is an annual scholarship awarded to an aspiring nurse currently enrolled in an undergraduate nursing program at a college or university, or is a high school student who has been accepted into a school with an undergraduate nursing program.

The scholarship is awarded through an essay contest with essays assessed based on quality, thoughtfulness and relevance to the topic. 

Requirements: Must be enrolled or accepted to a nursing program in an accredited institution. 

  • Must have at least 3.0 GPA

  • Must be a legal resident of the U.S or hold a valid student visa. 

Deadline: August 1, 2023

6. Castle Branch-GNSA Scholarship 

Award: $2,500 (twice yearly)

Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded each semester for a total of four scholarships per academic year to graduate nursing students who are advancing the nursing profession through a commitment to innovation, leadership, and/or mentoring.

Requirements: Must be enrolled as a graduate nursing student at an AACN member institution.

  • Must be a GNSA member or join if you’re interested in the scholarship. 

  • Must have at least 3.5 GPA and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. 

  • Must submit a 500 word essay on how they have contributed to the nursing profession. 

Deadlines: September 30, December 30

7. Geraldine “Polly” Bednash Scholarship

Award: $5,000

Awarded to top nursing students enrolled in a bachelor’s or higher degree program accredited with the AACN member institutions. 

Requirements: Must maintain at least a 3.2 GPA in the current program or last school attended.  

  • Must be enrolled at an AACN member institution

Deadline: January 31, April 30, July 31 and October 31

8. DAR Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship

Award: $2,500

This scholarship is awarded to three nursing students who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing and can prove financial need. 

Requirements: Must provide a letter of acceptance or transcripts to state they are in a nursing program. 

  • Must be able to prove financial need.

Deadline: Beginning of November to end of January for next school year.
