HOW HURRICANE HARVEY AFFECTED ME AND OTHER TEXAS RESIDENCE

HOW HURRICANE HARVEY AFFECTED ME AND OTHER TEXAS RESIDENCE

My heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by Harvey. It is one of the things that nature brings upon us that we have to deal with. Harvey made its landfall at Texas on 25th August and since then, it’s been one hell of a time for us in Texas.

I initially had a photoshoot scheduled for that day, ignoring warnings of a potential hurricane coming into town – because the last warning about a hurricane before Harvey didn’t happen. Still sure that the prophets of hurricane Harvey were going to be put to shame, I dressed up, and was admiring myself in the mirror when my photo director called. “Hey Sugar, I am not gonna make it today, the weather outside is terrific.” With my eyes rolling, I looked outside and…

Squish, squish, squish. What is that noise? I walked from my kitchen to the living room and OMG! My roof is leaking at multiple points, the living room couch had already become wet. Asides from placing me under compulsory house-arrest; hurricane Harvey intruded into my house, dripping water everywhere. I quickly placed bowls at the points of leakage and proceeded to dry up the wet furniture and rug.

Sighing, I had gotten tired of watching the havoc Harvey was causing on TV, proceeding to the balcony I took my one millionth look at my neighborhood. It was still raining and my street was still semi-flooded.

No longer enjoying the vacation Harvey imposed on me, I went downstairs, founded my way to the garage and fired up my ride. Navigating the flooded streets I drove to the nearest African store. I was going to prepare “Ewa Aganyin,” whether hurricane Harvey liked it or not.

What I saw on my way to the store can’t be put in words. I can only say a BIG thank you to everyone who has responded to the needs of the people affected by Harvey; the first responders, those who have opened their homes to displaced people, those donating food, aids and money, people who have offered encouraging words and prayers, etc. We are so grateful to you all.
